Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the character education values contained in the Gangamala Jataka text. Researcher take this research because researcher find problems that often occur to student related to decreased behavior and morality. With the decline in behavior and morality that occurs, the researcher is interested in taking research on character education values contained in the Gangamala text in the hope that this research can be used asa guide in carrying out character education values.
Character education according to the Ministry of National Education (2011), has identified 18 character values that need to be invested in students from Religion, Pancasila, Culture, and National Education Goals. In Buddhism character education is explained in the Noble Eightfold Path (Hasta Arya Magga) and the four noble qualities developed by all beings (Brahma Vihara). The Gangamala Jataka text is one of the jataka stories in Buddhism contained in Suttapitaka, Khuddakanikaya, Jataka Volume III: 610-623 which contains how a diligent servant was reborn as a king, about how he shared his kingdom with a water carrier, and about how the barbershop became a Pacceka Buddha.
The methodology used in this study is a qualitative method using a hermeneutic approach. Hermenutics is an approach used to interpret and analyze a text or story to find out the true meaning or meaning. In this study there are several steps that must be implemented including determining the primary direct meaning, determining the theme and clarifying symbolic meanings in the text. In addition to the steps in the study, there are also data analysis techniques which include data collection, data reduction, data presentation and decision making and verification.
The results of this study are that there are character education values contained in the text of Gangamala Jataka namely religious, honest, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, democratic, curiosity, national spirit, love of the homeland, respect for achievement, friendship / communicative , peace-loving, socially caring, responsible and generous. The character values in Buddhism contained in the Gangamala Jataka text contain characters in Buddhism which include the Noble Eightfold Path (Hasta Arya Magga) and the four noble qualities developed by all beings (Brahma Vihara).
The conclusion of this study is that there are character education values contained in the text of Gangamala Jataka namely religious, honest, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creative, democratic, curiosity, national spirit, love of the homeland, respect for achievement, friendly / communicative , peace-loving, socially caring, responsible and generous.
