Abstract
Children’s concentration during learning is a key factor in the success of the educational process, especially in non-formal environments such as Buddhist Sunday School (BSS). One approach that can enhance children’s concentration is the storytelling method. This study aims to determine the effect of the storytelling approach on the concentration of students at SMB Mahakusala in understanding the teaching of the Buddha delivered in class. The research used a quantitative approach with a research design based on observation and questionnaire instruments to measure concentration. The subjects were 30 childrens from SMB Mahakusala, aged 10 until 13 years.
Data were collected through direct observation distribution, which had previously been tested for validity and reliability. These findings highlight that storytelling has potential not only as an engaging teaching strategy but also as a pratical tool for improving student focus. Applying storytelling in other Buddhist Sunday School (BSS) can result in similar improvements, supporting educators in foresting greater attention and deeper understanding among students.
The results of this study indicate a positive and significant influence of the storytelling approach on children’s concentration. This was evidenced by an R square value of 0,973, indicating that 97,3% of the variation in concentration was explained by the storytelling approach, while 2,7% was influenced by other factors. Therefore, the storytelling approach has been proven to be more effective in increasing students concentration in learning activities at SMB Mahakusala and is recommended as a primary strategy in Dhamma education.
